NEGOTIATING FIRST SALARIES: TRAIN THE TRAINERS

Liz Karns MPH, JD
  Presentation Abstract
Negotiating salaries is a rarely discussed topic among faculty, students, and staff. Students, particularly female students, may have few experiences in financial negotiations. Yet we know that the first salary sets the stage for future economic prosperity -- students need to understand the risk v. benefit of negotiating. This brown bag lunch discussion will bring up the frequently uncomfortable issues of asking for money, keeping the discussion going, and knowing what others are getting. Through a series of reflective exercises, the participants will identify their own points of discomfort and ways to address them. Workshop participants will be better able to advise their students and to promote equal pay for all workers.
