Abstract. The present research investigates whether depletion of self-regulatory resources can ameliorate the negative effects of gender based stereotype threat. The study compares undergraduate men’s and women’s performance on a math task designed to activate stereotype threat among women after completing a short writing task that depleted one’s ability monitor and regulate their own performance. To the extent that stereotype threat involves the use self-regulation based interference, depletion should result in a rebound in relative performance among women experiencing gender based stereotype threat. |
