 Psychology Colloquium Series Lecture to Address:
  The Gender Wage Gap

"Dr. Hilary Lips, professor of  psychology, Radford University, will present a lecture, “Women Working for Less: What’s the Problem?” on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 at 5:15 p.m. in Room 247, Sally B. Johnson Hall."1

The gender pay gap is still alive and well. Women employed full time in the United States continue to earn 77 cents for every dollar that their male counterparts earn. This presentation will explore the magnitude and pervasiveness of the pay gap and some of the factors that help it to persist. It will challenge the notion that women earn less simply because of their own choices and preferences, and will explore what might be done to close the gap.
Lips is a professor of psychology, chair of the psychology department, and director of the Center for Gender Studies at Radford University."
Lips authored Gender: the Basics; Women, Men and Power; A NewPsychology of Women: Gender, Culture and Ethnicity; and Sex and Gender: An Introduction. Lips currently focuses on pay equity. Lips believes that “pay equity ...is a ...concrete measure of how things are...[one] cannot argue with the fact that women are still earning a whole lot less than men. It is a good indicator of where we stand. Women’s work is just not valued by society to the same extent as what men do.” Lips’ presentation is part of the Psychology Colloquium series and is also sponsored by the Women’s Program Office and the Women’s Studies Program.1
