Christie has worked in the financial industry as a computer systems emergency contingency and continuity planner. Six years ago she set out to change careers and re-entered the academic world with the goal of becoming a Clinical Social Worker and empowering those who have been affected by trauma. Since 2003 Christie has volunteered for the Sexual Assault Response and Awareness program as a crisis counselor and completed internships in the criminal justice, domestic violence, and substance abuse fields. Currently she is employed by Blue Ridge Behavioral Healthcare as a Substance Abuse Therapist at the Blue Ridge Recovery Center’s 30-day residential substance abuse treatment program and by Virginia Western Community College as an Adjunct Faculty member in the Social Sciences division.    Following her graduation from Radford University, Emily has worked at Virginia Tech. She is a faculty member in the Department of Communication, teaching Organizational Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Leadership in the VT Residential Leadership Community, Communication Skills to first-year students and Public Speaking.  She also served as the VT Director of Public speaking from 2000-2006.
She is a avid believer in volunteerism and incorporates Service Learning into her classes. Some of her service includes volunteerism at the Women's Resource Center in Radford as a Care Companion, and as the at-large member of the FAPT [Family & Assessment Planning Team] for Montgomery County.
