Dr. Irene Hanson Frieze: Keynote Speaker for the Fourth Radford University
         
The title of Dr. Frieze's keynote address is: Women's Roles in Post-Communist Eastern Europe           Irene Hanson Frieze is
Professor of Psychology, Business Administration, and Women's Studies at the University of Pittsburgh and has been a
Visiting Professor at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia and Adam Mickiewicz University in Poland.
She has always been interested in travel and foreign cultures and has lectured abroad in places such as Russia,
Germany, and Poland.
In 1989, she was a faculty member of Semester at Sea, in which she spent four months on a ship that sailed
around the world. This was during the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the beginning of the end of the cold war.
Dr. Frieze was interested in how these rapid changes would affect the young adults in Central and Eastern Europe. She
initiated a project to study these changes, in collaboration with researchers in 10 different countries. Dr. Frieze has
traveled frequently to this part of the world and will be speaking about some of her experiences during the years between
1989 and 1998.
Professor Frieze is a recipient of a distinguished
publication award from the Association for Women in Psychology and has been a recipient of Faculty Exchange Program and
Fulbright Research Fellowships. Her current research interests include attitudes about work and gender roles in Central
and Eastern Europe, gender and career motivation, violence and victimization, career choice, and love and intimacy in close
relationships. Professor Frieze has published numerous articles on these and other interests.
